WATRA was represented this week at a landmark series of meetings geared towards the full implementation of the ECOWAS Regional Roaming Regulation. From the 4th to the 6th of August 2025, participants gathered in Monrovia, Sierra Leone, to attend two significant meetings: the official launch of roaming services between Sierra Leone and Liberia, and the signing of a roaming MOU between Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire.
The meetings, which convened regulators and heads of regulatory agencies, and representatives of mobile operators, opened with statements and addresses from a number of dignitaries, significantly the Chairman of LTA-Liberia, Hon. Clarence Massaquoi, the Director-General of NatCA-Sierra Leone, Mr. Amara Brewah, the Executive Secretary of WATRA, Engr. Aliyu Yusuf Aboki, and the Resident Representative of the President of ECOWAS Commission in Liberia, H.E. Josephine Nkrumah.
The following days saw work sessions on regulatory issues and anti-fraud guidelines, technical discussions, and drafting of technical and legislatory documentation, and culminated in both the signing of the MOU between ARTCI-Cote d’Ivoire and LTA-Liberia, and the successful go live launch of free roaming services between Liberia and Sierra Leone.
These developments signify concrete progress towards more accessible and affordable telecoms services across the region, more people-focused regulation, and a more interconnected West Africa.
