The 2-day event, which held on the 12th and 13th of October 2023 in Abuja, Nigeria, was preceded by a 3-day Capacity Building Program (Workshop) on International Roaming for the participants, which was organised by SmartAfrica.
The opening ceremony saw remarks from the following key attendees: the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation of ECOWAS, represented by Ms. Folake Olagunju, Principal Program Officer for Internet & Cybersecurity; Mr. Aliyu Yusuf Aboki, the Executive Secretary of WATRA; Mrs. Thelma Efua Quaye, Director for Digital Infrastructure, Skills, and Empowerment at the SmartAfrica Secretariat; and Mr. Fofana Lanciné of the Regulatory Authority of Telecommunications of Côte d’Ivoire (ARTCI) who is also the Coordinator of the Technical Committee of NRA Focal Points.
Mr. Aliyu Yusuf Aboki highlighted the mission of WATRA, which is to enhance telecommunications in West Africa through collaboration, and pointed out the fact that the ECOWAS Regional Roaming Regulation is a monumental step towards its achievement.
He urged all key players in the project to ensure that the progress made so far serves as a source of encouragement and motivation towards the ultimate achievement of the goal of the project, which would benefit all citizens and the sub-region at large.
