WATRA attended the 23rd edition of ITU’s Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-24) from the 1st to the 4th of July 2024 at Kampala, Uganda.
The meeting featured thematic sessions bringing together regulators, policy-makers, and digital stakeholders from around the world and providing a global platform for knowledge exchange around the theme “Regulation for impact”.
Regulators worked together to identify and endorse the GSR-24 Best Practice Guidelines, which include a series of considerations for balancing innovation with regulation to create a positive impact on societies and economies from emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).
The Executive Secretary of WATRA, Engr. Aliyu Yusuf Aboki, moderated a session on safe and inclusive financial services featuring the following panelists: Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, Director General, National Communications Authority, Somalia; Mr. James Gabriel Claude, CEO, Global Voice Group, Spain; Ms. Mei Lin Fung, Chair, People Centered Internet, USA; and Mr. Ronald Azairwe, CEO, Pegasus Technologies Ltd., Uganda.
The session focused on the need for regulatory frameworks to balance innovation with security in the digital financial ecosystem, and emphasized the importance of infrastructure development, improved digital literacy for underserved populations, private-public sector collaboration, regulatory harmonization, and advocacy for supportive government policies.
